Osprey Artwork by Peter Dennis
Here’s your opportunity to obtain another fine convention T-shirt for HISTORICON! Every year
since 2006, HISTORICON has used a piece of Osprey Publishing artwork on the program and T-shirts to
create a lasting memento of the event. It is fantastic to see a sea of programs and T-shirts with
fantastic artwork on it. This year we are again using Osprey artwork by Peter Dennis.
Since the convention theme this year is ”Pike and Shotte” – Seventeenth Century
Warfare, 1600-99, the scene depicted on the T-shirt is from the Siege of Vienna (1683), as the
defenders heroically throw back the attacking Ottoman Infantry with musket, plug bayonet and sword.
On Thursday 12th August 1683, the Ottomans exploded two mines simultaneously under the city defences.
The dirt thrown up by the explosions provided a ramp across the moat sufficient for fifty men to charge
across. The Viennese quickly threw up new defences including a chevaux de frise and rushed to repel
the attack under the command of the seriously ill but inspirational Ernst Rüdiger von
Starhemberg pictured in the center. This great piece of art was used in the Osprey Publishing
Campaign book Vienna 1683 written by Simon Millar and illustrated by Peter
Dennis. Peter will be at the show this year with two presentations and a painting demonstration
at the Osprey Publishing info booth.
A fantastic and unique piece of artwork (pictured adjacent); a must have HISTORICON 2010 souvenir!
