Will be presenting the following two Napoleonic era seminars:
Massena's Last Fight: The Battle of Fuentes de Oñoro, 3-5 May 1811
Friday 1 PM, 1 hr
This seminar will focus on French Marshal Massena's last battle, a three day struggle that his
opponent, the Viscount Wellington, called "the most difficult battle I was ever concerned
in." In addition to a thorough campaign overview and combat narrative, materials presented
will include terrain, orders of battle (hand-outs), leadership assessments, and other
scenario-related data based on John Gill's research and a recent trip to the battlefield.
Transition from War to Peace after Wagram: The Battle of Znaim 10-11 July 1809
Friday 4 PM, 1 hr
This little-known final engagement between the main armies of Napoleon and the Austrian Archduke
Charles, was a cornucopia of daring, caution, drama, and tempting what-if's as the pursuing French
caught up with their Habsburg foes in the wake of Wagram. Based on the recently-published third
volume of his Thunder on the Danube study of 1809 (Frontline, 2010), Prof. John Gill will
discuss the chronology of the battle and the transition to ceasefire and armistice, including
details on terrain, orders of battle (hand-outs), leadership and tactical assessments, as well
as other scenario-related data.

Exodus from The Alamo: Exploding the Last Stand Myth
Friday 1 PM, 1 hr
For the first time, Dr. Phillip Thomas Tucker's Exodus from the Alamo, the Anatomy of the Last
Stand Myth tells the true story of what actually happened at the Alamo on the morning of March
6, 1836. The truth of what really occurred at the Alamo contradicts almost everything that we have been
told, especially in regard to the fabled last stand. Quite simply, the mythmakers created the legend of
the tenacious last stand in which thousands of attackers were killed and wounded. In truth, the battle
was little more than a mere skirmish, with the defenders caught by surprise by a predawn attack and routed
before they could galvanize an organized and effective defence of the lengthy perimeter, because the
attackers gained the walls before the garrison was awakened. In the confusion and darkness, most Mexican
casualties resulted from fratricide instead of defender's bullets.
When the walls were easily breached, garrison members fled the doomed Alamo by way of three exit points.
They wisely decided that it was better to live and fight another day rather than attempt to defend a
position already compromised. Therefore, and as revealed by new sources and evidence, most garrison
members were killed not inside but outside the Alamo on the open prairie by Mexican lancers and
dragoons. This seminar presents a controversial new viewpoint on the legendary stand of Davy Crockett
and his men at the Alamo, and what really happened – not to be missed!

A Forgotten Hero of the Pacific War...the Harrowing Tale of Russell Volckmann
Saturday 2 PM, 1 hr
Mike Guardia, author of American Guerrilla by Casemate Publishing, will be talking about his
experiences writing and researching the epic story of Russell W. Volckmann. Abandoned by his leaders
on Bataan and ordered to surrender, Volckmann refused, disappeared into the jungles, and raised a
guerrilla Filipino army of over 22,000. For the next three years he led a guerrilla war against the
Japanese in the Pacific – killing over 50,000 enemy troops. Aside from his decisive role in the
outcome of the Pacific campaign, Guardia declares Volckmann the progenitor of modern counterinsurgency
the “Father of Army Special Forces”.
