A testament to the true nature of war and heroism, Matthew was immortalized in the epic film
Black Hawk Down
(his character was played by actor Josh Hartnett), which tells the heroic account of a group of elite US soldiers sent into
Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993 as part of a UN peacekeeping operation. Young Rangers and veteran
Delta Force
soldiers fight side by side, outnumbered and surrounded, for 18 hours in the most hostile district of Mogadishu
until a rescue convoy could be mounted to retrieve them. As a part of that mission, both as a survivor and a hero,
Eversmann brings to life the horrors of his experience, what he took from it, and humanizes the creed by which
he lived: “Never shall I fail my comrades…RANGERS LEAD THE WAY!”
Eversmann enlisted in the Army as an infantryman in December 1987, and was stationed at Fort Drum, New York, with the
10th Mountain Division.
In 1992, he reenlisted and arrived at Fort Benning, Georgia, for his assignment in the
3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.
He spent eight-and-a-half years in the Regiment, serving as a squad leader, a weapons squad leader, the battalion
air operations sergeant, the battalion liaison sergeant, and a platoon sergeant. Eversmann was also the officer
in charge of the 75th Ranger Regiment’s Pre-Ranger Course that helped train future leaders to pass the
grueling Army Ranger School.
While serving as a sergeant in the Ranger Regiment, Matt traveled the world. From Panama to England, Korea
to Egypt, he met and trained with soldiers across the globe. In August of 1993, Matt and his company deployed
to Mogadishu, Somalia, in support of
Operation Gothic Serpent.
Eversmann has attended many military schools: Airborne, Ranger, Sniper, Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and
Escape or SERE School, the Primary Leadership Development Course, the Army’s Basic Noncommissioned Officers
Course, as well as the Advanced Noncommissioned Officers Course. He was the Leadership Award winner at Ranger
School, the Primary Course, and the Basic Course. He also graduated from the Master Fitness School, Jumpmaster
School, Special Operations Tactics course, and the Equal Opportunity Course. Eversmann wears the following awards
and decorations: the Army Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Ribbon, eight Army Achievement Medals,
four Army Commendation Medals, a Meritorious Service Medal, the Ranger Tab, Master Parachute Wings, Royal Thai
Jump Wings, British Jump Wings, Egyptian Jump Wings, and the Expert Infantryman’s Badge. For his service
in Somalia, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor device and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge.
In August 2000, Eversmann was awarded an honorary bachelor’s degree from Hampden-Sydney College in
recognition of his service to his country.
Eversmann has lectured on his experience in Somalia all over the world. He has given presentations to
soldiers at all levels, from officer candidates at Fort Benning to colonels at the Army War College. He has
represented the Army on Larry King Live and on Dateline with Stone Phillips, and has
lectured the cadets and faculty at West Point, Annapolis, and the Air Force Academy. Matt’s list
of presentations to the professional community is impressive. He has appeared before audiences at Ford,
Price Waterhouse Coopers, Goldman Sachs, Merck, RAND, the Bakersfield Business Conference, USA Today,
and the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce. Eversmann has been to many colleges across America, too, from
Penn State to Notre Dame, Virginia Tech to Ball State, and he makes lasting impressions on every campus he visits.
Matt recently returned to the United States after serving 15 months in Iraq. He retired from the Army as
an Infantry Company First Sergeant after 20 years of service. He continues to serve others as the founder
and president of Freeman Phillips LLC, a leadership development company. Matt is co-author of
The Battle of Mogadishu
(2004).
Mr. Eversmann will be presenting his very popular seminar twice during the convention:
Task Force Ranger – Operation Gothic Serpent (Fri. 3:30 PM and Sat. 2:00 PM); see Events (PEL)
link at left for complete details. If you saw the movie Blackhawk Down, then you need to hear it from someone
who was in the middle of the real action.

Jason grew up like any other
kid living in the inner city with dreams of becoming a footballer, pop star or actor. In 1976, when
Jason was fourteen years old, his father got a job teaching poetry and creative writing in New England,
resulting in his family upping sticks and moving to Massachusetts from London. The switch from British
urban living to rural East Coast academia was to rule the next stage of his life. As at English secondary
school, Jason continued to focus on all the sports, music and other pursuits that his new American home had to offer.
Towards the end of high school, Jason’s thespian streak was rediscovered after a drama teacher
cast him in an adaptation of a Dostoevsky short story he was directing. The campus of Hampshire
College – where his father was a professor – just happened to be the home of Frisbee excellence
on the East Coast. Jason quickly fell in with the flying disc crowd. Playing Frisbee and drama became twin obsessions.
After competing in freestyle Frisbee tournaments across Europe – winning the European Championship and
coming third in the world – Jason entered College in the fall of 1980. Trying to balance the Frisbee
with drama studies was an impossible task and he gave up Frisbee to declare a serious intention to commit to
the drama program. During his Frisbee ‘life’ he’d travelled all over America, was sponsored
by AMF Voit, played Madison Square Garden at half-time of a Knicks game and met some interesting people; but
acting is what he set his heart on.
His college acting resume includes plays such as: ‘The Misanthrope’, ‘The Insect
Comedy’, ‘Light Shining in Buckinghamshire’, ‘The Happiest of the Three’,
and ‘Marat Sade’, ‘Ruffian on the Stair’ and directed ‘Mother Courage’
by Bertolt Brecht as part of his senior thesis. At end of his studies he attained a BA in acting and directing.
Upon moving back to London in 1985, his first acting jobs were playing various parts on the London fringe
theatre circuit. He progressed through educational theatre, more prestigious fringe venues, national tours
and the West End stage. The first big job he landed was a huge beer commercial campaign for ‘Miller
Lite’ that (due to its blanket broadcasting in almost every ad break) made his face instantly
recognizable by every television viewer in the U.K.
He followed the normal career path of a jobbing actor and in the spring of 1992, walked into an office
in London’s Soho to audition for a little known story called
Sharpe.
That’s probably how you know Jason best, but he has appeared in many films including
Memphis Belle, The Russia House, The Steal, Fifth Element,
Turn of the Screw, Fairy Tale: A True Story, About a Boy, In America,
Road to Guantanamo and Kickass.
In the years since finishing
Sharpe,
Jason has taken a huge amount of video footage he shot on location and turned it into a series of
films documenting the behind the scenes adventures of the Sharpe unit.
‘The Video Diaries of Rifleman Harris’
has entertained vast legions of Sharpe fans around the world, and at the moment he’s
working on the final two episodes of his video diary. It culminates with the filming of
Sharpe’s Waterloo, and we all know what happened there!
Jason ‘Harris’ Salkey will present – for the first time in North America –
the following seminar twice: At The Sharpe End! (Fri. 2 PM, Sat. 11:30 AM), plus
Recollections of a Rifleman (Sat. 6:30 PM); see Events (PEL) link at left for complete details.
Jason will also be available for “Meet & Greet” and autographs throughout the convention
as part of
The Sharpe Experience!
– a display of uniforms, weapons and other memorabilia from the Sharpe series of movies – and will
also be introducing the
Saturday Nite Film – A Sharpe Movie!
(Sat. 10 PM.)

In the field of tactical wargame designs, few designers
have had as much innovative impact as John Hill. In the 1970s, John started his own company, The
Conflict Game Company, to design and publish tactical and operational games that broke from traditional
wargame mechanics such as Verdun, Overlord, Kasserine Pass, and Bar-Lev. John decided that he preferred
to design wargames rather than run a business, so he sold the company to Game Designers’ Workshop
and became a freelance wargame designer. From that point on, John’s designs for Avalon Hill,
SPI, SDC and others, became noted benchmarks for their innovative approaches to simulating unique tactical situations.
In 1977, John designed
Squad Leader
for Avalon Hill. Squad Leader broke the mold for how tactical combat was portrayed on the gaming board, and
the impact of Squad Leader – which has had more “expansion kits” than any other
wargame – is still felt today. Some of John’s awards included being the first
freelance wargame designer inducted into the Origins Hall of Fame (1979), along with Charles Roberts
and H.G. Wells awards for best tactical wargames (1977, 1983) and the readers of Campaign Magazine
selected Squad Leader in 1980 as the “Best Wargame of All Time.” To the historical miniature
wargamer, John is best known for his Johnny Reb miniature rules for the American Civil War period. After 25
years, Johnny Reb – now into its third edition – remain as popular as ever.
In the 1980s, John’s flair for innovative tactical simulation brought him to the attention of the
Government’s Defense and Intelligence Communities, and for the next 16 years he worked for the
government as a senior military analyst. Following a final four year tour at Los Alamos National
Laboratory, John retired from classified government work and is currently working with today’s
wargame companies to update and republish many of his older designs and to, once again, explore new
directions in tactical simulation.
Mr. Hill is being sponsored by the
Weider History Group
and will be presenting two seminars:
Intelligence Success and Failures in Operation Desert Storm (Thurs. 2:30 PM);
The American Civil War in the Southwest (Fri. 11:30 AM); see Events (PEL)
