HISTORICON is the biggest of HMGS East’s three conventions,
and therefore naturally has the largest number of Guests of Honor
and Featured Guests. From authors, artists, rules and scenarios
designers, gaming and hobby VIPs, these guests will be hosting
seminars and/or games during the convention. The following are this
year’s Guests of Honor and Featured Guests, who
will be hosting seminars – with some also hosting games

“Uncle Duke” — Duke Seifried –
Guest of Honor:
The man who has been called the P.T. Barnum of military wargaming. Grandmaster showman
and HMGS’ favorite son returns again to HISTORICON! This summer the Master
Showman will present a seminar – Ancient Battle Orders and Tactics
(Thurs. 7:30 PM). Plus three of his spectacular showpiece theme games on the North-West
Frontier and Second Afghan War, 1878-80: Rise of the Rebellion (Fri. 10 AM),
The Kohat Pass (Sat. 9 AM), and The Curse of Kali (Sat. 2 PM). See Events

Colonel David M. Glantz – Guest of Honor:
Served for over 30 years in various field artillery, intelligence, teaching
and research assignments in Europe and Vietnam; taught at the U.S. Military
Academy, Combat Studies Institute, and the U.S. Army War College;
founded and directed the U.S. Army’s Foreign (Soviet) Military
Studies Office, and established and currently edits The Journal of
Slavic Military Studies. Has written or co-authored more than 60 books
and self-published studies and atlases, as well as hundreds of articles
on Soviet military strategy, intelligence, and deception and the history
of the Red (Soviet) Army, Soviet (Russian) military history and WWII.
Colonel Glantz will be presenting four seminars at this year’s
convention: Eastern Front “What Ifs” (Thurs. 5 PM);
Siege of Odessa, 1941 (Fri. 11 AM); Operations in the
Khar’kov and Dondas Regions (Oct.-Nov., 1941 on Sat. 11 AM;

Lester W. Grau – Guest of Honor:
Military Analyst for the Foreign Military Studies Office at Fort
Leavenworth, Kansas. Graduate, U.S. Army’s Defense Language
Institute (Russian) and U.S. Army's Institute for Advanced Russian
and Eastern European Studies. Retired Lt.-Colonel, US Army, 1992
(combat tour in Vietnam, four European tours, a Korean tour and a
posting in Moscow); military education included the Infantry Officers
Basic and Advanced Courses, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff
College and the U.S. Air Force War College. Traveled to the Soviet
Union and Russia over forty times, and a frequent visitor to the Asian
subcontinent – especially Pakistan and Afghanistan. Visited Iraq
in October 2003, and is the recent CENTCOM Fellow. Published 100+
articles and studies on tactical, operational and geopolitical subjects.
His books: The Bear Went Over the Mountain: Soviet Combat Tactics
in Afghanistan (1996), The Other Side of the Mountain: Mujahideen
Tactics in the Soviet-Afghan War (co-authored with Ali Jalali,
1998), The Soviet-Afghan War: How a Superpower Fought and Lost
(2001), and currently working on a book about the U.S. and coalition
effort in Afghanistan centered on Operation Anaconda. Mr. Grau will be
presenting three seminars at this year’s convention: Battle
of Maiwand, 1880 (Thurs. 2 PM); Afghanistan Then and Now

Ian Knight – Guest of Honour:
Has written, co-written or compiled nearly thirty books and monographs
of highly acclaimed and influential books on British Colonial military
campaigns (especially the
Anglo-Zulu War of 1879,
for which he is internationally regarded as a leading authority on). He is a
founder member of the
Victorian Military Society
and former editor of its journal, a Guest Lecturer for
Holts Battlefield Tours,
and continues to write and research various colonial wars topics. For more bio

James Bloom:
Became interested in military history after reading HG Wells’
Little Wars and Spaulding/Nicholson/Wright's
Warfare: A Study of Warfare from the Earliest Times in college.
Since he couldn’t make a living from military history he pursued
tax and financial analysis, but kept up his interest in warfare by
doing consulting work for Trevor Dupuy's think-tank, HERO in the early
1970s, where he learned to become wide-ranging in my military pursuits.
Since retiring, has worked on a wide range of military historical
topics, from Megiddo to Afghanistan 2001. Mr. Bloom’s articles
have been published in wargaming journals, military history magazines
and encyclopedia, and will be presenting one seminar: Beyond Suez –
British & French Naval Strategy in the Indian Ocean, 1809-10

Scott Bowden:
Is a graduate of Texas Christian University, an eight-time award-winning
author of 23 works connected to Napoleonic and American military history,
and the recipient of this year’s HMGS Scruby Award (Sat. 7 PM; for

Frank Chadwick:
Founded Game Designers' Workshop in 1972, and was inducted into the Origins
Hall of Fame in 1984. Chadwick has more than sixty published games to his
credit, and his Desert Shield Factbook (1991) reached number one on
the New York Times bestseller list. Mr. Chadwick will be presenting three
seminars on WWII at this year's convention: Rock Bottom - The British
Desert Army, 1942 (Thurs. 4 PM); Many Weapons, Few Men - The Italian
Desert Army, 1942 (Fri. 10 AM); On to Cairo - The German Desert Army,

Robert Cortese:
Weapons designer and inventor of the US Army's Advanced Individual
Combat Weapon. Authored several articles on military technology and
operations. Has served in the Army, worked as an engineer for the
Federal government and has a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
degree from Temple University. Mr. Cortese will be hosting a seminar on
The Pakistani Al-Khalid 2000 Tank (Fri. 9 AM); see Events (PEL)

John Dunn:
An associate professor of History at Valdosta State University, where he
teaches courses on World Military History, the Islamic World, and Slavic
Europe. Author of numerous articles and Khedive Ismail’s Army
(2005), he studies military affairs in 19th-20th Century Egypt, Poland,
and China. Mr. Dunn will be hosting a seminar on Chinese Warlord Armies,
1917-28 (Sat. 3 PM); see Events (PEL) link at left for full details.

Kaarin Englemann:
A board member for the
Boardgame Players Association (BPA)
and Assistant Convention Director of the
World Boardgaming Championships (WBC)
– held July 29-Aug.5 at the Lancaster Host – right after HISTORICON!
She helped publish several boardgames under the auspices of Engelmann Military
Simulations. Has a record of playing historical miniatures, mostly ancients and
once managed to roll 16 one's in a row, opening the door for the Romans to easily
outflank the Carthaginians in DBA. One of her favorite miniatures rules is Blue Max.
Ms. Englemann will co-host a seminar (with Don Greenwood) about Miniatures vs.
Boardgames: Everything You Wanted To Know (and more) About WBC (Sat. 9 AM); see
Events (PEL) link at left for full details.

Colonel (Ret) Wilbur (Bill) Gray:
Army Intelligence Officer holding numerous assignments in Germany
and the United States, with masters' degrees from the University of
Southern California and the DIA Joint Military Intelligence College,
USAF Air War College graduate. A wargamer for 33 years, serving in
several official HMGS positions the last 12, Bill has authored more
than 50 articles and reviews for the wargaming and military history
press, specializes in Napoleonics and has recently published his own
set of wargaming rules, The Age of Eagles (Napoleonic Fire
& Fury –

Don Greenwood:
Was the R&D Director for
The Avalon Hill Game Company
for 26 years. He designed or developed many of their best selling
wargames including Squad Leader, ASL, Up Front and
Breakout Normandy. For the past nine years he has been President
of the
Boardgame Player's Association (BPA)
and Convention Director of the
World Boardgaming Championships (WBC)
held at the Lancaster Host immediately following this year's HISTORICON (July 29–Aug. 5).
Mr. Greenwood will be co-hosting a seminar (with Kaarin Englemann) on about Miniatures vs.
Boardgames: Everything You Wanted To Know (and more) About WBC (Sat. 9 AM); see Events (PEL)

Jean Lochet:
Wargaming since 1974, especially the Napoleonic period, though what he
read in mostly English history books on the period did not always agree
with his relatively large French collection of French books on the
period. That led to some interesting discussions at his wargaming
club, and decided to put those discussions in writing. It’s how
his book Empires, Eagles & Lions started with the help of
many, including George Nafziger. His forthcoming book on
Napoleon’s Army and How it Worked (no definite title yet, some
600 pages!) will be published by Matt DelaMatter. He is working on a
book on the French Cavalry in the Wars of the French Revolution and of
the Empire (about 80% complete) that should follow. Mr. Lochet will
be presenting a seminar on French Dragoons in the Wars of Empire
(Sat. 7:30 PM); see Events (PEL) link at left for full details.

Dana Lombardy:
Best known for his multiple award-winning Streets of Stalingrad
board wargame (three separate editions since first released in 1979),
and for his nearly twenty television appearances, including multiple
episodes of The History Channel’s “Tales of the
Gun” series. Lombardy has contributed as an editor, cartographer,
graphic artist and designer on many books, games and magazines, and was
Publisher of Napoleon Journal from 1996-2000. Mr. Lombardy will be
presenting three seminars at this year’s convention:

“Soviet” Offensive Against the US Army (Fri. 7:30 PM);

Major Peter F. Panzeri Jr. US Army, Infantry:
Author and combat veteran Pete is best known for his award winning
Osprey Publishing book Little Big Horn 1876: Custer's Last Stand
(in it's 9th printing since 1996). His military career includes earning
the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and Bronze Star in Iraq, and
several teaching assignments as Chief of Military History at the US
Army Infantry School, Tactics Chief at the Military Intelligence School,
and at the US Military Academy, West Point Prep. Pete has also published
Santa Anna Rules! Warfare in Mexico 1820-1820, and Plains War
Campaigns
